Katherine Zeserson

Katherine Zeserson is a cultural activist. Her current work focuses on strategy, practice and professional development in the fields of music / cultural learning and arts for social justice. She believes in the power of reflective artistic practice to inspire human development and build compassionate communities.

Over the last 35 years she has won an international reputation as a strategic thinker, leader, facilitator, trainer and educator, across a wide spectrum of organisations and communities - from early years’ settings to universities, grassroots women’s groups to local municipality departments, and small arts collectives to government ministries and major concert halls. From 2001 to 2015 she was Founding Director of Learning and Participation at Sage Gateshead in the Northeast of England, responsible for the strategic design and leadership of its pioneering music learning and participation programme.

Currently, in the UK she is Programme Director for inspire-music, a Paul Hamlyn Foundation initiative stimulating professional learning to improve music education; as well as being critical friend / evaluator for a number of cultural learning organisations. Her international commitments include music education, leadership and programme development work with organisations in Luxembourg, Germany and Ireland – including the European Concert Halls Organisation; as well as a long term relationship (since 2009) supporting and facilitating a network of cultural partners delivering socially engaged arts and music education programmes with young people in São Paulo, Brazil.

As a professional vocalist she has a particular interest in a cappella music and in singing for all, working regularly with ensembles Mouthful and Human Music. She is Chair of Governors at Chillingham Road Primary School (Newcastle), Chair of the Board of Sing Up Ltd., Chair of Lawnmowers Independent Theatre Company (learning-disabled led arts organisation) and member of the Board of Musical Futures (music education organisation).
