Among other things, 2023 is a year of celebrating Polish music for the Orchestre Philharmonique du Luxembourg: after Witold Lutosławski, it will be Karol Szymanowski featured on March 10 with his Fourth Symphony (Symphonie concertante) – more accurately described as a concerto for piano and orchestra. For the solo part, the Andalucian pianist Javier Perianes returns to Luxembourg. Since Szymanowski was also known as the «Polish Debussy», it is befitting that his work is preceded by the Frenchman’s Prélude à l’après-midi d’un faune. Piotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky’s Fifth Symphony concludes the concert, which is preceded by an artist conversation in English with the conductor and the soloist at the Salle de Musique de Chambre at 7:15 pm.

In his Enigma-Variations, Edward Elgar created thinly veiled portraits of persons close to him. This masterwork of musical late romanticism is performed together with Anton Webern’s first work, itself still a child of the late romantic style, and Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy’s highly romantic Violin Concerto, featuring the young violinist Daniel Lozakovich. Ticket revenues from the concert by the Orchestre Philharmonique du Luxembourg under the baton of Kazuki Yamada will be donated to the Luxembourgish Croix-Rouge, which will use this funding for urgently needed relief for the suffering population in Ukraine.

Moving through our environment with open ears, finding the beauty of nature reflected in music. Composers have always been inspired by the sounds of their surroundings – birdsong, storms, the roaring sea… As diverse as the interfaces between music and environment are the approaches to both of them that arise from cultivating this attitude. That is where the third themed weekend comes in: it features workshops and concerts, to arouse curiosity among listeners of all ages, and too explores how we can treat our environment with respect.
