Angela Münchow-Rathjen


First violin lessons with Prof. Evelyn Distler in Hamburg. As a 12-year-old, played for Yehudi Menuhin, who accepted her into his school in London, Stoke D’Abernon, where she studied under Jaqueline Gazelle, a pupil of Ysaÿe, and, among others, Nadia Boulanger. Lots of solo and chamber music concerts in and around London; also performed as a soloist in Gstaad at the Menuhin Festival. After finishing her studies, she played for Prof. Max Rostal, who accepted her into his master class at the Hochschule in Cologne, where she also worked with the Amadeus String Quartet. Meanwhile: first prize, Gedok Prämienstiftung, Hamburg, and Medica pro Musica Preis, Düsseldorf. She finished her studies with the Konzertexamen mit Auszeichnung, and then joined the KlassikPhilharmonie Hamburg as leader (concertmaster). In 1984, she joined the first violins of the Orchestre Symphonique de RTL/Orchestre Philharmonique du Luxembourg. In 2013, she founded a string quartet, the Quatuor Henri Pensis.
