His trailblazing work with Eastern European folk music material made Béla Bartók one of the outstanding composers of the first half of the previous century and also a pioneer of music ethnology. On March 28, the Budapest Festival Orchestra under Iván Fischer follows some of the composer’s many trails, playing the Rumanian Folk Dances and Hungarian Peasant Dances, both of which contain plentiful references to song and dance motifs. During the second half of the concert, Bartók’s only opera, Bluebeard’s Castle, will be heard – one of the composer’s key works.
