He showed the music world that organists are not necessarily grey-faced wallflowers: Cameron Carpenter is a man of grand, daring gestures, extravagant outfits and a consuming passion for his instrument. During his solo recital playing the Philharmonie’s grand Schuke organ on May 15, he pays homage not only to the organ composer, but also the organ virtuoso Johann Sebastian Bach, who put the fear of God into many a colleague and rival during his day, as tradition would have it. In addition to original works by Bach, Carpenter also plays his own arrangement of the Goldberg Variations. Written, according to another tradition, to help pass sleepless nights, in Cameron Carpenter’s hands these variations are far more likely to have an electrifying than a soporific effect!
