Musique de l'époque de Jeanne d'Arc
The Danish filmmaker Carl Theodor Dreyer created a milestone of cinematic history with La Passion de Jeanne d’Arc, shot in France in 1928. Originally perceived as a tragedy, the fact that the film, which was conceived as a «talkie», had to be shot as an «old-fashioned» silent film due to lack of money turned out to be a blessing in disguise: several film scores were composed over the years, or the work was accompanied by improvised music. The five musicians of the British Orlando Consort have chosen a totally different approach, underlaying Dreyer’s images with 16th-century vocal music by composers such as Gilles Binchois, Guillaume Dufay, Estienne Grossin and Johannes Le Grant.
