«Improving living conditions for the weakest members of our society» – that is the motto of the Croix-Rouge luxembourgeoise. The Philharmonie supports its endeavours by presenting a benefit concert every year; this season, the revenue goes to the project of a holiday camp for handicapped and socially disadvantaged children. For this good cause, the European Union Youth Orchestra plays under the baton of Vasily Petrenko on April 23. The orchestra was founded in 1976 in the spirit of a united Europe. The soloist in the one-hundred-percent Russian programme, which features works by Glinka, Rachmaninov, Tchaikovsky and Shostakovich, is the Latvian soprano Kristine Opolais, «whose mere name transports the directors of theatres and concert halls all over the world into states of ecstasy» (Le Figaro).
