Concerto grosso op. 6/10 HWV 328
Georg Friedrich Handel is the genius who propelled opera and oratorio into a golden age. Antonio Vivaldi is the visionary who was instrumental for the rise of the solo concerto. Their musical styles, however, differed fundamentally: while Vivaldi remained faithful to the model of Arcangello Corelli, the latter, a true «enfant terrible» of baroque music, departed radically from it. After his death, Vivaldi’s works had an unexpected influence in England, where they met with a very mixed reception: judged in the light of Handel’s work, they were as phenomenally successful as they were controversial. But are the two masters so different? This festive concert celebrating the 25th anniversary of the Ensemble de la Chapelle Saint-Marc offers listeners an opportunity to make up their own minds by conjuring this musical summit meeting of the two grandmasters.
