Under the leadership of its chief conductor Gustavo Gimeno, the Orchestre Philharmonique du Luxembourg traverses a powerful arch spanning the breadth of musical history on May 3, demonstrating surprising relationships between completely different eras and styles: a late romantic Schoenberg in selections from the Gurre-Lieder is juxtaposed with the dramatic orchestral pieces of Wagner’s Götterdämmerung, which stand alongside Alban Berg’s Drei Orchesterstücke – and all this unfolds from a starting point in the 18th century, with Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach. Accompanied by the OPL, mezzo-soprano Anna Larsson, a vocalist known for her extraordinary intensity, leads this expedition through music history.
