Sergueï Prokofiev:
Concerto pour violon et orchestre N° 2
Dmitri Chostakovitch:
Symphonie N° 8
After the sensational success of Shostakovich’s Seventh Symphony, expectations were high for subsequent works. The composer described the Eighth Symphony, completed in 1943, as a «triumph of beauty», but press and public were reserved and none less than Sergei Prokofiev criticized its length and melodic quality. Today its dimensions and dense emotionality remain impressive. The concert also features Prokofiev’s Second Violin Concerto, written in 1935 for the French violinist Robert Soetens and played in Luxembourg by the Latvian violinist Baiba Skride. Before the concert Charlotte Brouard-Tartarin presents insights into the unusual repertoire (in French).
