Kayhan Kalhor, Kiya Tabassian setar

The setar, a four-stringed long-necked lute, plays a central role in Persian music. In Kayhan Kalhor and Kiya Tabassian, it has found its ideal ambassadors. The former, who is also a virtuoso on the string instrument kamancheh, is a founding member of Yo-Yo Ma’s Silk Road Ensemble; the latter one of the co-founders of Ensemble Constantinople in Montréal. In the spirit of a musical practice acknowledging neither geographical nor historical borders, the two Iranian performers invite their audience on a journey to their musical roots – between tradition and renewal. Before the concert, Kiya Tabassian participates in an Artist Talk in English at 7:10 pm, discussing his music-making.
