Hector Berlioz: L'Enfance du Christ

«A work resembling the ancient, artfully illuminated missals in its workmanship»: such was Hector Berlioz’ goal in creating L’Enfance du Christ, and indeed, he shaped the multi-faceted work with the patience and diligence of an illustrator of illuminated codices. The oratorio was certainly not Berlioz’ Golgotha, but brought him glory instead: thanks to this piece, he was inducted into the Institut de France. More than enough reason for the Orchestre Philharmonique du Luxembourg to join the Gaechinger Cantorey, a chorus specialized in historically informed performance practice, to perform this rarely-heard meditation on the birth of Jesu on Dec. 8. A lecture by Helmut Loos in German at 7:15 pm at the Espace Découverte will offer detailed insights on the work.
