«Once upon a time… An Ennio Morricone Story» is an arrangement for symphonic wind orchestra, chorus, cello and soprano that draws on the original essence of Ennio Morricone’s great music. Conductor Steve Boehm has meticulously arranged about a dozen of Morricone’s well-known melodies from films such as A Fistful of Dollars, Cinema Paradiso, Days of Heaven, Exorcist II: The Heretic, For a Few Dollars More, The Good, the Bad and the Ugly, Guns for San Sebastian, The Hateful Eight, The Inglorious Basterds, Kill Bill, The Legend of 1900, The Man with the Harmonica, and Marco Polo. This project, an evocative soundscape in twenty-three movements, can be described as a «concerto» for orchestra, as several instruments take turns as soloists. The participating musicians of the Orchestre d’harmonie de l’école de musique de Käerjeng and the Chœurs de l’école de musique de Käerjeng (Suzette Thomé-Schneider, Choir Director and Musical Supervision) are current and former students, as well as students and musicians closely connected to the music school. They receive vocal support from the Chorales d’hommes réunies (Josée Faltz-Wilmes, Choir Director). The solo contributions of soprano Julie Thomé and cellist Anik Schwall are also worth mentioning. During the performance, the audience’s attention is repeatedly drawn to individual instruments such as the harmonica, the alto flute, guitar, harp, piano, oboe and trumpet. The unusual sounds of the Chinese bāwū flute, the xūn flute, the shēng mouth organ, the waterphone and various exotic percussion instruments which give the work a distinctive touch are characteristic of Steve Boehm’s compositions and arrangements. «Once upon a time… An Ennio Morricone Story» will be a memorable musical experience for all involved, not least due to the honour of performing at the Philharmonie. www.kms.lu
