Gustav Mahler: Symphonie N° 9
For his guest appearance with the Philharmonia Orchestra, one of London’s most important orchestras, Esa-Pekka Salonen chose two works which share a fascination for femininity: in condensed musical form, the Suite from Alban Berg’s opera Lulu conveys Frank Wedekind’s literary depiction of a woman who fascinated all men; Mahler’s Ninth Symphony is filled with scarcely disguised allusions to his spouse Alma, whose effect on her contemporaries was hardly less than that of her fictional counterpart Lulu.
