Music Education Academy 2018

«The stated aim of the MEA was to provide high level input and training that would inspire and enable orchestral musicians to engage positively with music education programmes. In fact, the first edition of the programme achieved far more; with the participants reporting that their whole outlook on the role of the musician had been broadened, with many personal revelations of confidence, and a real explosion of creative energy directed towards not just music education, but also the wider questions of concert planning, presentation, context and artistic evolution.»
-- Katherine Zeserson

The Music Education Academy (MEA) is a high-level training seminar for emerging talented musicians based in Luxembourg or any other European country and aims at developing knowledge and practical skills in music education. The intense 6-day training platform will take place from 19-24 October 2018 in Luxembourg and is initiated and organized by the Philharmonie Luxembourg.

In recent years, the significance of music education has greatly increased. Presenters, producers and orchestras place music education at the heart of the institution’s life and work with audiences and participants of all ages so that they can get involved in and inspired through music. Musicians play a key role in this process. However, there is a lack of specific and suitable training opportunities for musicians who want to work in educational settings. The MEA supports up and coming musicians with the ambition to acquire skills and knowledge in music education.

Combining training and practical involvement in Philharmonie Luxembourg’s education program the Philharmonie intends to engage MEA participants in follow-up projects. Projects might be concerts for young audiences, participation  and learning projects or others, according to the profile of the participants. Lectures, round tables, coaching and music-making sessions will be led by leading figures in the field. The Academy will be chaired by Katherine Zeserson (chair of MEA) and Pascal Sticklies (Philharmonie Luxembourg).

The following experts will contribute to the Music Education Academy 2018: Lisa Tregale (Head of BSO Participate- Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra), Peter Moser (composer, performer, community music facilitator), Steven Walter (Artistic Director PODIUM Esslingen), Dr. Constanze Wimmer (Researcher, Director of the Master «Music Pedagogy – Music in context» at Anton Bruckner Privatuniversität Linz), Nora Romanoff-Schwarzberg (viola player and MEA Alumna), Benjamin Prins (stage director) and Jorge Prendas (Head of Education of Casa da Música).
