From the very beginning, Johannes Brahms' most extensive composition was never intended for liturgical use, but for the concert hall. A German Requiem occupies an exceptional position in the composer's oeuvre and in the history of the genre. His own choice of text instead of a traditional liturgical canon, German instead of Latin, Protestant instead of Catholic in character, and offering consolation instead of mourning.
