Exactly 90 years after its premiere, Varieté enjoyed a unique renaissance at the 2015 Berlinale Film Festival – in a digitally restored version. This movie is considered to be one of Ewald André Dupont’s masterpieces, and one of the finest achievements of the silent film era. In the lead role, cinema legend Emil Jannings accounts for much of the movie’s success, as do the unique special effects used to heighten the dramatic intensity of the story, which is set in the circus milieu: they broke new ground at the time and still enthral audiences today. With a musical accompaniment rarely found in silent film scores which includes ukulele and theremin, The Tiger Lillies revive the atmosphere of a circus in the 1920s. The silver screen never felt so alive!
