II. Allegro con grazia

With their second programme dedicated exclusively to Piotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky – on the previous day, they will play the Violin Concerto and the Fifth Symphony – the Gewandhausorchester Leipzig and Andris Nelsons allow audiences to experience two hardly-known early works by the Russian composer, both inspired by literature: the symphonic ballad The Voyevoda based on a poem by Adam Mickiewicz, and the Fantasy-Overture inspired by William Shakespeare’s Hamlet. The programme is completed by the Sixth Symphony, in which the composer followed a programme he kept secret, claiming that it contained his entire soul.
