Ibrahim Maalouf grew up listening to the songs of Umm Kulthum,

and paid tribute to her with a record released in 2015. Conceived along the lines of the Egyptian diva’s songs as a vast suite leaving plenty of room for improvisation, this project celebrates a woman and an artist whose legacy is immeasurable. And it is safe to bet that, like her, the trumpeter will succeed in inducing in his listeners at the Philharmonie the mythical tarab, that state of intense communion between the performer and the audience.

What does the trumpet mean?

In movies, on stage or at your local village fair, you’ve probably seen or heard a trumpet more than once, but how well do you really know this ancient yet perpetually surprising instrument? In this episode, Simon van Hoecke from the Luxembourg Philharmonic breaks down what the trumpet is, means and the many emotions she can carry, from exuberant joy to the deepest melancholy.
