Betrayal, agony, sacrifice, death.

Throughout the centuries, the story of Jesus Christ’s final hours has been recounted many times – none more famously than by Johann Sebastian Bach. With its mixture of poised recitative, rapturous solos and prayerful hymns, his St Matthew Passion offers a poignant musical response to the original biblical text. Beyond the church community for whom it was originally intended, the Passion’s dramatic and emotional intensity has the power to move each and everyone of us, regardless of belief or creed.
