Following a near-death experience, Mahler began composing Symphony N˚ 5, which bursts forth with a solitary trumpeter playing a funeral march. Yet Mahler’s fortunes were soon to turn. Partway through composing his fifth symphony, he met the love of his life, got married and welcomed his first child into the world.
