Call for applications

New composition for the der/gelbe/klang ensemble
rainy days 2026

The Philharmonie Luxembourg invites Luxembourgish and Luxembourg-based composers to submit applications for a new piece for an ensemble (maximum instrumentation: flute, oboe, clarinet, percussion, piano, violin, cello, double bass, and electronics), lasting 15 to 20 minutes, that will be showcased at the rainy days 2026 festival by the der/gelbe/klang ensemble. The piece must relate to this year’s festival theme, «Heat», and the commission will be remunerated at the rate proposed by FLAC.

The Munich-based contemporary music ensemble der/gelbe/klang is creating, in collaboration with the Sound-dramaturgien collective, an immersive 3D audio concert, featuring notably a new work by Yiran Zhao. This new commission is designed for a 3D listening experience: one of the performers wears a binaural microphone in their ears and moves around the stage. What this «living microphone» hears on stage is transmitted in real time to the audience’s headphones. The new composition must adapt to this media and narrative context and explore the creative spaces that emerge between proximity and distance, instrument and body, as well as between movement and stillness.

To note

The piece should be 15 to 20 minutes long and be written for flute (also piccolo, alto and bass flute), oboe (also English horn), clarinet in A or B-flat (also E-flat and bass), percussion, piano, violin, cello, double bass, and electronics.

The piece must revolve around the festival’s theme, «Heat».

Pre-recorded electronics are permitted, but live electronics are not.

Deadline for submission of the complete typed score: 15.09.26.
