One of Ernest Lubitsch’s early works,

Carmen is a monumental adaptation of Prosper Mérimée’s drama. Backed by the Berlin-based UFA studios, which sought to rival Hollywood with grandiose productions, the film features in the title role the enigmatic actress Pola Negri, with whom the director would go on to collaborate closely. Composed by Tobias Schwencke, the music is inspired by themes from Georges Bizet’s opera of the same name.
