«Always Dowland, always doleful.» John Dowland may have poked fun at his own reputation with this song title, but his songs of tears, longing and heartbreak were the biggest hits in Elizabethan England. And four centuries later they still land. Thomas Dunford and the Jupiter ensemble perform them with voices and a consort of violas da gamba – a warm, burnished sound that wraps around you like velvet. If you’ve ever put a sad playlist on repeat, you already understand this man’s genius.
