«The world’s first female musician»
What a fine tribute to this brilliant composer! Published in the periodical Mercure Galant in 1691, it is fictitiously attributed by its author to Jean-Baptiste Lully, who supposedly penned these compliments from the Elysian Fields of the realm of the dead. But the French composer and harpsichordist also – and most importantly – garnered praise from the living, not least from Louis XIV and Madame de Montespan. One of the first women to compose an entire opera, she also wrote pieces for solo harpsichord during her exceptional career, which Anne-Catherine Bucher introduces you to in this moderated concert.
