Violonzono, violonzello or violonzino? That is the question.
Between the 16th and 17th centuries, there were at least twenty different names used to refer to this low-register string instrument: basso da brazzo, basso da viola, violoncino, violone, violonzello… The name «violoncello» did not appear until 1660.
