The Philharmonie is
chang ng

More room for music and for you!

« With that extension, we really asked ourselves how we could improve our audience’s visit, before and after our events » - Stephan Gehmacher, director of the Philharmonie

Since autumn 2024, the Philharmonie Luxembourg has been getting a facelift! The extension due for 2027 aims to increase the building capacity and make it even more welcoming.

The extension, facing south towards Place de l’Europe, will be built over two levels and will include a multi-purpose room dedicated to workshops, conferences, productions for young audiences, educational and community projects and receptions. The artists’ and staff cafeteria, and above all the restaurant area, are being extended. «With that extension, we really asked ourselves how we could improve our audience’s visit, before and after our events,» explains Stephan Gehmacher, director of the Philharmonie.

The shape of the extension follows the curves and dynamics of the building, as Christian de Portzamparc, architect of the Philharmonie, has been entrusted with the project! In fact, the architectural design is being carried out by 2Portzamparc (formed from the merger of the offices of Élisabeth de Portzamparc and Christian de Portzamparc) in collaboration with CBA (Christian Bauer & Associés Architectes s.a.). The Administration des bâtiments publics is the contracting authority for this project.

Throughout the works, a fence surrounds the construction site. Windows have been fitted in the fence to allow the public to follow the progress of the works over the months. Photo updates are also published regularly on our social media channels.

FYI, the Philharmonie Luxembourg remains open throughout the works!
