Some call it madness, others call it love…

A Romantic with a knack for unhappy romances, Ludwig van Beethoven never married, despite falling in love with a string of noblewomen. Another lifelong bachelor, Franz Schubert, was refused permission to marry the girl of his dreams for not having enough funds to support her. Twice married, Richard Wagner’s entanglement in a love triangle is said to have influenced his opera Tristan and Isolde, a story of star-crossed lovers. Discover the music inspired by three composers’ heartache in this lush orchestral evening.
Lisa Batiashvili regrets that, for health reasons, she has to withdraw from tonight’s concert. We wish her the very best in her recovery. Many thanks to Gautier Capuçon for stepping in to replace her. He will play Edward Elgar’s Cello Concerto instead of the planned Ludwig van Beethoven’s Violin Concerto.
