«How can the dead be truly dead when they live in the souls of those left behind?»

A fan of composer Richard Wagner, Anton Bruckner learnt of his hero’s passing whilst he was writing Symphony N° 7. No wonder the work features such achingly beautiful melodies as well as the addition of four «Wagner tubas» by way of tribute! Also influenced by tales of death was Leoš Janáček, whose Taras Bulba depicts the brutality of war between the Cossacks and the Poles. Settle down for an evening of intense symphonic storytelling!

For this episode of “the art of conducting”, we sat down with Sir Simon Rattle, the music director of the London Symphony Orchestra. He talked to us about what the lockdown situation looked like for orchestras, the rehearsing & composing process of Ondřej Adámek’s piece “Where are you”, the collaboration between conductor & musicians and much more! Special thanks to the Hotel le Place d’Armes and it’s team for the warm welcome!
