Rachmaninoff wrote his gloriously lyrical Piano Concerto N° 2 while recovering from a nervous breakdown, while Berlioz mined his own romantic despair to create the unforgettable Symphonie fantastique, in which a young artist is driven mad by love. Both works have proved enduringly popular since their premieres. In this performance Gustavo Gimeno conducts the Luxembourg Philharmonic and Italian pianist Beatrice Rana – a shooting star if there ever was one!

And we’re all coming home with this screening of Steven Spielberg’s 1982 masterpiece. Childhood favourite for some, timeless tale to (re)discover for others, no doubt it will be a pleasant surprise for all, with John Williams’ iconic soundtrack played live by the Luxembourg Philharmonic on the stage of the Grand Auditorium. Winner of four Academy Awards, E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial is much more than a family-friendly sci-fi blockbuster. It is first and foremost a subtle parable through which to grapple with deep and essential questions about empathy, friendship and belonging. What if Spielberg’s endearing alien actually helped to make us more human?

At St. Valentinus-Stift, the elite of tomorrow are made fit according to the motto: be smarter, be faster, be better. How good that Wendy counters the drill with her story of Peter Pan. But not everyone wants to believe in the boy who doesn't want to grow up. But suddenly Peter Pan appears in the school canteen in the flesh and whisks everyone away to Neverland. The adventure begins!

Prokofiev’s Piano Concerto N° 2 is one of the most challenging in the repertoire and caused a scandal at its premiere due to its wild inventiveness. It is paired with Shostakovich’s dramatic Symphony N° 10 – allegedly a depiction of the terrors of Stalinist Russia. Come and hear the Luxembourg Philharmonic perform these works with brilliant young pianist Haochen Zhang and internationally renowned conductor Tugan Sokhiev.
This concert will be broadcast live on radio 100,7 and SR2.

This is certainly the case with Beethoven’s transcendental String Quartet op. 127, the first of the visionary ’late quartets’ that he wrote during his final years. It is paired here with Mendelssohn’s lovely Four Pieces op. 81, comprising works from across his career. After the concert, audience members will have the chance to meet the Kreisler Quartet – all members of the Luxembourg Philharmonic – over a drink.
